30 in 30: Day 15: St. Louis Blues

Sooo. It’s not that I like the Blues a ton. It’s just that some of my favorite players signed there during free agency. I have jokingly said that I’ll probably fall in love with Oshie during the Olympics (if I do, please institutionalize me immediately. I don’t care that he’s from Washington originally. In fact, that probably makes it worse.)

But! Despite that! And despite that they beat the Preds in October at the only game I’ve managed to get to this season… They somehow ended up in 15th place. Very apt, in my mind, considering that was the number my favorite wore when he was with the Canucks. That’s right, my favorite player is…

Derek Roy

He’s so tiny compared to everyone else on the ice at times. There was a comment when he was on the Canucks about how he and Jordan Schroeder brought down the average height of the Canucks by a good 4″. [Source: releasethecracknell]

He’s provided some very amusing moments…

Looks really good shirtless. Really good. [Source: rawrzuhlind]

Does hockey well. (True fact: This was my very first NHL game back in April 2013, Canucks-Preds, in Nashville.  This was also his first goal as a Canuck. Coincidence? … Probably, but lol) [Source: jordanschroeders]

There actually is an explanation and a story – I’ll let you go look at the source though. [Source: bieksler]

I miss Derek Roy, seriously. I bet Higgins does too. [Source: rawrzuhlind]

Let’s be real though. I’m just here for how freaking adorable he is. [Source: rawrzuhlind]

Honorable Mention: Maxim Lapierre

I have to give a shoutout to the other guy that signed with the Blues from Vancouver. I don’t think anyone will argue that his presence hasn’t been missed in the Canucks’ bottom six this season. [Source: nhlhcky]

Canucks Pre-Season Started…

So… That happened. Anyone else feel like we never left the playoffs? Whose bright idea was it to have the first game after a long summer be against the team that eliminated us? (Probably the same person that said sign Sestito but not Lapierre.)

Speaking of former Canucks, let me wax poetic talk about the fact that Lapierre scored two goals in his first period with the Blues… I haven’t looked at his TOI but yeah… Added to that Mason Raymond’s gorgeous shorthanded breakaway goal and assist with the Maple Leafs… Anyone else miss them? (Reminder, Canucks brass, you could still sign Raymond. It’s only a PTO! YOU HAVE A LITTLE CAP SPACE!)

Monday wasn’t completely horrible though. I liked the look of our young guys, especially Shinkaruk. Eddie Läck will be the perfect complement to Lu… and not just on Twitter. I’m not ashamed of my adoration of Läck, the kid is seriously talented. And hilarious. And attractive but that is neither here nor there. But he had some nice saves.

Rumor has it Jordan Schroeder will be in the line-up and I’m looking forward to that. It would be better if he was centering Raymond and Hansen again though.

Why I waited to post this – more information was coming, obviously. I’m worried about his shoulder now. He played in the prospect’s games, but maybe he isn’t completely healed?

Free Agency (In which I cry over Mason Raymond & the Canucks in general)

Mason Raymond. Derek Roy. Maxim Lapierre. What do these three have in common besides being on the Vancouver Canucks? All UFAs this year and all most likely not to be signed by Vancouver. Of the three, Lappy is most likely to be back, from what I’ve picked up around the web.

Of the three, the one I’ll miss the most is Mason Raymond. He was the player whose story intrigued me enough to start watching hockey and he quickly became my favorite. This past season he continued to endear himself to me and the RSH line (Raymond-Schroeder-Hansen) blew me out of the water. I think that given a little more time, the “speed” line would have been hard to contain by other teams.

My dream placement – should the Canucks not blow me out of the water and re-sign him after all – is Nashville. Can you imagine a healthy Colin Wilson and MayRay on a line? All my dreams coming true.

The acquisition of Derek Roy made me pause for all of about 30 seconds before his grin got to me. Shortly after that I became a fan of his skating style – so sue me, I saw the pretty smile and eyes first. I was fortunate enough to see his first goal as a Canuck against Nashville (in Nashville at my very first live hockey game) and may have screamed my lungs out while surrounded by Predators’ fans. Losing him will not only make the average height of the Canucks go back up (slightly offset by Jordan Schroeder – herein after known as The Brat for Reasons) but will decrease the amount of pretty on the team. Chris Higgins’ abs will have a lot to live up to. But on that, if the largest worry is who is going to provide devastating smiles during interviews… The Canucks are most likely doing the right thing in not re-signing him.

Lappy, however. It will piss me off if they do not do something about Lapierre. He gels with the team and more than that, I believe they need him to anchor the forth line. Come on, Canucks. You’ll give a contract to Tom Sestito, but not Maxim Lapierre? That makes no sense to me.
